Hey guys,
I felt like doing the obvious work to give back Mario and Luigi their classic SMB1 texture colors.

These are good, if you can sort out the eyes then im pretty sure this texture will be used in the final release.

Oh, don't worry about the eyes, that's just a graphic bug from the emulator. They show up perfectly fine in the game.

Its a cool texture edit, but personally, I don't really like it.

Mario has always been red/blue. The original sprite might not have shown it, but even if you look at the original famicom floppy disk coverart, you can tell he is red/blue. I think the sprite just looked like that for either technical limitations, or just strangeness. Just like in Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, how Link has pink hair. Why is his hair pink?! The concept art gives him blond hair! No one knows, its just one of those strange sprite things.

If the concept art was like that, then maybe. If Super Mario All Stars was like that, then maybe. Heck, if the original Donkey Kong didn't give him red/blue, when he was known as Jumpman instead of Mario, then maybe.

Not trying to nark on your work, I'm just saying.

I dunno, i kind of like it. Yes Mario was blue/red in the artwork, but , he was red and white in the .

What do the rest of the team think?

I vote we use it.

I just noticed.

"Classic" Mario is definitely red pants/blue shirt.

Around SMB3 it changed to blue pants/red shirt.

Look at Mario memorabilia. Red pants/blue shirt.

Look at Super Mario All Stars. In SMB 1 , they gave him red pants/blue shirt. But in SMB3, they gave him blue pants/red shirt.

I'm pretty sure that 'brown' is supposed to be 'blue'.

I'm just saying if we're supposed to create a retro mod, then we go all the way down to the original sprite colors.
I personally also prefer Mario in red/blue, but you cannot deny the iconic look of the red/brown NES sprite. This is is mainly a proof of concept that the colors could work, and to give people an option for extra retroness.

But maybe we don't have to be as strict with the brown. I could still rework the texture to give him red pants and a blue shirt... the question is, what to do with Luigi then?

I don't mind you making the texture though. I wish more people would try to release custom textures. Just giving feedback. I wish someone would give me more detailed feedback on the backgrounds I made :/

Your backgrounds are good, much more like the original, thats why they are being used in the project!! I know if you made some more they would probably be used too.

Ok, those second ones look much better! With a little more small tweeking, I think this will be a really nice change.

Its small changes like these that will really make our project shine with quality, and not just some "hey guys, we made some original levels, and stuff".

I'm pretty certain that eventually, we will be able to edit the world map. If we could tweek it to be less themed, and more like SMB Deluxe, we'll be good.

But hey, there are always limitations on these types of hacks. We'll just do what we can. As long as we can surprise the player and make as many adjustments as possible to improve the experience, I'm happy.

If we go for a Riivolution patch, we can just keep both of them as an option.
But for a final choice, I'd also say let's go with the red/blue one.

I think this Mario and Luigi still needs a little bit of work, to be honest. Something about the colors just doesn't look right to me..

Also, not sure about using that Peach. Look at All-Stars, it kept the old-school Mario colors, but gave Peach the updated cloths.. so I think we should keep her current outfit as well.
