[SMBS] Information Nsmbs111

Hello, This Will be where You will find levels for Super Mario Bros. Special. It was originally released between SMB and SMB2 the lost levels. It was created by Hudson Soft. for the NEC PC-88 and Sharp X1. It used the same gfx as the original games. It also has enemies from Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. along with some power-ups unique to itself. I am trying to recreate these 1:1

If you want to help let me know.
Enjoy!!!

Here are some better completed maps
http://vgmaps.com/Atlas/X1/index.htm#SuperMarioBrosSpecial

Here is a good overview of the game, new items, and new (old) enimeies.
http://themushroomkingdom.net/games/smbs-x1

For now We should probably use propeller hat for wing, Ice Flower for the hammer, POW for the Super Star, and Mini Mushroom for the Hudson Bee.

So the Box I made was in .png for some reason it made it a jpeg should be easy to convert. It was the best scans I could find. although the back cover is incomplete. If anyone can find a good scan of the back I will take the time to make a more wiiish cover. but for now it looks pretty good in wiiflow. Also if anyone knows how to read Japanese it would be nice to get a translation of the back.

I got the nes hack for my nes emu on ds i can upload for you if you want? It's a good reference point as it's similar to what we're trying do on the wii. The PC 88 version was screen based as opposed to scrolling i believe, something we can't achieve on the wii.

Yea, I've played the nes hack completely. I'm just wondering how the fighter flys and side steppers move and how they are killed, it is important to know, ya know

Hello marduk666, I was bored one day just Googling "Super Mario Bros. Special" and I ran across this site. Well, I have good news for you: I'm here to inform you that I am the very same "Wario Bros." from VGMaps.com

You seem to have questions on what this game has to offer like the new items and the new enemies. So I joined this site just so this little project of yours becomes successful. So fire away every question that you have for me and I'll tell you what you need to know. Please note that I have absolutely no knowledge on Wii hacking. I hope I am a help to you. ^_^

PostSubject: Hello Wario Bros.   [SMBS] Information EmptyWed Dec 29, 2010 5:37 pm

First off thanks for the maps, had I not stumbled upon those I suppose I would have never even made these levels.
Second; how did you beat this game? The play control is beyond terrible.
Third: Thanks again, great maps.

As far as questions go

The fighter flies, how do they move?
How can you kill them?
How do they hurt you?

The Same questions about the
Crabs
Fireball
Barrels

The wing I gather is like swimming but through the air, but for a limited time?

I don't know anything about the hammer, does it go away after a time?

That's all I can think of
any help is appreciated

First: Your welcome! Wink
Second: Are you playing the NEC PC-8801 version? If so, that version is a piece of crap compared to the superior Sharp X1 version. The Sharp X1 version runs smoother, the clock doesn't drain fast, and actually fun (I have to say the Sharp X1 version of the ROM is harder to find than the PC 88 version). And I was able to find an emulator with savestate feature (I still have the savestates starting at each of the 32 levels)
Third: You're welcome, again, lol.

Fighter Fly:
- Move: EXACTLY like the did the classic Mario Bros. game (not "Super") but a little slower (can walk off edge)
- Kill: Fireball, star, or jump under a brick block (jumping on them is a no-no)
- Hurt: Touch, simple as that

Crabs (aka Sidesteppers)
- Move: forward, simple as that (can walk off edge)
- Kill: Fireball, star, or under a brick block (but don't get mad like in classic Mario Bros. strangely. So it's works just like a spiny. Don't jump on them either)
- Hurt: touching Mario

Fireballs:
- Move: left and right like they do in the arcade Donkey Kong (do not walk off edge)
- Kill: Star, that's it (and the hammer)
- Hurt: same as prev. enemies

Barrels:
- Move: same physics as the barrels in New Super Mario Bros Wii but unbreakable and only go one direction
- Kill: Star (no fire or jump)
- Hurt: Just like a NSMBW barrel

Wing (that it's official name): What you posted is correct: like swimming and it's about 15 seconds long (no physical difference of Mario and no music or anything special

Hammer: Similar to arcade DK, but can jump, venerable in the back, no music, about 15 seconds. Kills absolutely anything but Bower (real or fake one) When it ends, you'll stop and it'll be placed where it stopped (and strangely you can pick it up again)

Things that you didn't ask but I'll tell you anyways:

The Bee like item from the first level is known as "Hachisuke" (whatever that means in Japanese :/ )
- When collected: You'll get 8,000 points, simple as that

An item that looks like an atom is called a "Lucky Star"
- When collected: Kills all on-screen enemies

An item that looks like a clock near the end of the game (just called "Clock")
- When collected: + 100 seconds

A hazard: Icicle
- Hangs from a solid object, falls like an icicle, hurts to touch, fireballs kill it like an enemy

EDIT: I almost missed your "First, Second, Third" questions So I answered them now.

Thanks a lot, that will be helpful.

If your new to wii hacking be sure to check out

www.wiibrew.org awsome wii site go there first
www.wiihacks.com guides on how to hack your wii
www.gbatemp.net more guides and alot of usefull stuff

I suggest using modmii by xflak it is the easiest way to soft mod your wii period. http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=207126
then I suggest www.rvlution.net or a usb loader like wiiflow to play these mods.

Be sure to look up reggie the nsbw editor. http://www.wiihacks.com/customization-apps/53944-reggie-new-super-mario-bros-wii-level-editor.html
a lot of homebrew worlds can be found here http://rvlution.net/nsmbw/

modding the wii can be frustrating, and a lot of fun.

Your welcome and thanks. And I do have the Homebrew Channel (unless that isn't enough)

Oh, and I answered your "First, Second, Third" stuff from my answers post in an edit if you're curious. And I forgot to mention the Fighter Flies jump higher than they did in classic Mario Bros: about 1.5 or 2 blocks off the ground, can't remember which (one block is as tall as a ? block)

I think HBC works for riivolution. I don't use riivolution so i'm not sure
If you want to put levels in an iso you need a usb loader like wiiflow, an iso of nsmbw, and wiiscrubber

Man, it's been awhile I went hunting for that. I used an X Millennium v0.26 T-tune STEP 1.43 + ikaTune release 2 (I'm not that good at finding stuff online. I was able to find it the first time by finding a big rar file filled with tons of X1 roms and a couple emulators but I doubt I can show you to that) It might be outdated too. Zophar's Domain has an X Millennium that has save states if that helps

We don't mind at all if you post links to ROMs and things around here. We don't really care Razz

Thanks for all of the help and useful information! You're maps are all really well done. I might check out that emulator myself to give this game a try Very Happy

Do you own New Super Mario Bros Wii? If so, setting up your Wii to play custom levels is pretty easy. If not, you'd have download the game, use tools to manually replace the files on the disk, and either setup your Wii to load games from a hard drive, or burn your custom disk and setup your Wii to play "backups".

Huh, most forums I go to usually say "don't link ROMs or other illegal materials" so I'm use to not posting that stuff but okay.

Your welcome for the maps (I'm proud of my work on the maps too) and the help. One reason why I'm helping out and that I ripped the maps is because SMB Special should deserve MUCH MORE recognition than it currently has and a Wii hack might be a good way. And as for trying it out, go for it!! It's amazing and really fun (that is if you play the Sharp X1 version since the PC-88 version is pretty painful.) Sure, it's no NES but it's close.

And yes I have a copy of NSMBW (the disk to be exact). And I would like to try to play custom levels (as long as I can keep the disc's original levels if I want. Do this hacking pernamently changes the disc's levels or only when I boot the levels manually?)

We're not one of those 'real' forums though. We're not interested in getting members to join or boosting our website ranking. This is just free forum we registered as a place to work on this little hack. A few of the files we've posted for our project are probably just as illegal as ROMs are. We're not too concerned about a ROM link here or there Very Happy

About the SMB Deluxe levels, keep in mind that all we can pretty much do is re-arrange the levels. We can also swap out some of the assets, like the music and tilesets, but we can't alter the way enemies work, so some stuff may not be 100% accurate.

To play custom levels:

  1. Download Riivolution: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Riivolution

  2. Extract it to the apps folder on your SD card (so that it'll show up in the homebrew channel).

  3. Go here, and scroll down to the New Super Mario Bros. Wii section. Right click --> save as where it says download. You should get an xml document called "NSMBtemplate.xml".

  4. Make another folder on the root of your SD card, named "Riivolution", and put the NSMBtemplate.xml you just downloaded in there.

  5. Make another folder on the root of your SD card, named "nsmb". Download some custom stuff, and put it in this folder. Boot Riivolution from the homebrew channel, make sure NSMB Replacement is Enabled, and click Launch.

Your SD Card should look like this:

Doing this only uses the custom levels when you go through Riivolution to boot the disk, and the custom levels are turned on. If you have any questions or troubles setting everything up, lemme know! Hope what I said here makes sense >_<
