| 10 blocks is now the official distance We have a choice to make about the distance of the flagpole from the platform blocks on a number of the levels. The original Super Mario Bros used a distance of 8 blocks whereas NSMBW uses 12. When playing through these levels many people have noticed myself included that it is very easy to hit the top of the flag and get a 1-up. The choice is then do we go for authenticity in terms of the distance or authenticity in terms of gameplay. Personally I think it would be better to make the distance 12 blocks since people will notice the difference in gameplay more than the difference in spacing. What does everyone else think? Here is a screenshot from NSMBW 2-3

| I vote for 12 blocks. I don't think people will notice it anyways. | |

| I think that people -will- notice the extra spacing, but at the same time they will understand the change. Look at Metroid: Zero Mission. In this remake of the NES Metroid, they added a feature that let you hang from ledges. There are several spots that are only reachable by hanging onto the ledge. In other to make this work, they had to change some of the spacing of the tiles from the original. So don't worry, we are not the first to break accuracy for gameplay. | |

| I noticed this when creating my levels for two reasons, when I playtested them on the wii I was hitting the top every single time, and in the style it just looked too close. I didn't mention it cos at the time people were reporting that things were 1 tile out so I thought oh well it's accurate. I'm with you guys 12 blocks all the way. | |

| I'll vote for 12 blocks as well, but it does beg the question how far we want to go with altering the stages to re-balance the difficulty. With the current engine, most of the stages are far too short and easy. | |

This is an easy change to implement so we can do it now. Some of the other things (like gaps that are too short, hammer bro throw rate etc) are more difficult to quantify or implement.

| If its too close, it will be to easy and make the game boring | |

| Ive been playing some of the levels with the 12 block distance, does anyone else think 12 maybe too far?
I think maybe 10 blocks would better, as i have been unable to reach the top of the flagploe on any level so far........

| It is possible to reach the flag with 12, you just need to get as much of a run as possible on the 2 blocks, then time your shaking of the wii remote just right i wouldn't mind it being one or 2 blocks closer though, as in the original there was no such thing as twirling in the air to go further | |

| I wasn't using the shake & spin, but if thats what it takes to get there then maybe it should be left at 12. But on the other hand we are trying to be as accurate as possible...... Hmmmm
I think we should go for 10 blocks, this should be just far enough to reach without the spin, but, not close enough to be to easy. What do the rest of you think?
EDIT: I just tried a level with 10 blocks and its spot on you can reach the top of the flagpole, without the spin jump, which is more authentic, and its not to easy either. Just like the old nes, get to the very left of the top blocks and run right jumping at the last moment.
I personally think we should go for 10 blocks instead of 12.

| If its to close its too easy, and the game will be to easy and its gonna get boring fast, people like challenges right? Hmm, lets leave it on 11? | |

| But with 11 blocks u would still have to use the spin to reach the top. With 10 blocks it is almost spot on like the old game, without doing the spin, the player can just get to the top of the pole. | |

| yes, but with 10 blocks people will just spin anyway, even though they don't have to and then it makes it easy for them to get a 1-up. I say 12 blocks | |

| I say go with 10. I haven't tested 10 yet, but 12 was definitely too hard. Have any of you went back and played the original game lately? You can usually run through the level fairly easily, and if your timing is decent, you can hit the top of the flag. Its not supposed to require pin-point down-to-the-millisecond response timing to be able to make the top. Seriously. | |

| If we are trying to be as accurate as possible then we should go with 10 blocks, seriously, try a level with 12 and tell me it's possible to get the top without spinning. 10 blocks makes the gameplay as close to the original as possible without being too easy. | |

| Ok I added a new option to the poll for 10 blocks. You can cancel your original vote and change it if you want. | |
